TSUNAGU: Connecting to the Architecture of Kengo Kuma

  • The Center for Architecture

The first-ever U.S. exhibition of world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma will explore the philosophy of continuity in Kuma’s work. Tsunagu: Connecting to the Architecture of Kengo Kuma focuses on Kuma’s design for the Portland Japanese Garden’s Cultural Crossing project, his first public commission in North America. Visitors to this free exhibition will be able to interact with blue Oregon-sourced granite, sudare screens, tatami mats, and curls of Port Orford cedar. Balazs Bognar, Chief Manager at Kengo Kuma & Associates, is the exhibit’s curator. He says, “Kengo Kuma is known for connective spaces, often putting nature and the human experience first. His emphasis on light as well as locally sourced materials makes the Portland Japanese Garden’s expansion project the perfect lens through which people can see and understand the guiding ideas of Kuma-san’s work.” Hosted by the Portland Japanese Garden.

Street Seats 2014

  • The Center for Architecture

The Center For Architecture (CFA) Design|Build Program explores temporary urban installations that activate underutilized spaces throughout the city. This year the CFA has called for designers to enter creative concepts that push the boundaries of the Portland Street Seat program. With the theme of “Active Streets” designers programmed their installations to create healthy, social and playful structures for parking spaces in front of the CFA in the Pearl District. Earlier this fall, a jury selected two winning proposals to be built and installed for the duration of the festival.

Directed by Emmy award-winning filmmakers Joe and Harry Gantz (Taxicab Confessions, The Defenders) AMERICAN WINTER is a documentary feature film that follows the personal stories of eight families struggling in the wake of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. The film presents an intimate snapshot of the state of the economy as it is playing out in the lives of American families, and highlights the human impact of budget cuts to social services, a shrinking middle class, and the fracturing of the American Dream.

CFA Film Night: Short Cuts

  • The Center for Architecture

Short Cuts: 4 Stories from the center's collection on art, craft, the environment, history and humor.

NW Documentary presents:
'IT'S A RING THING'
11 minutes, Alison Hiatt and Chris Jones
In this short film from local filmmaking institution Northwest Documentary's 2011 program, a Portland street artist creates daily delights by using the city's historic sidewalk horse rings in his creations.

NW Documentary presents:
'ASCENDING THE GIANTS'
12 minutes, John Waller
In another local documentary, Portland arborists Will Koomjian and Brian French set out to locate, scale, and measure the tallest, oldest spruce tree along the windswept Oregon Coast.

'I AM AN ARTIST'
6 minutes, Evan Mather
Three's a crowd in this imagined mash-up between a Serbian performance artist, her Mon Calamarian ex-partner, and a contemporary Dutch architect - animated with vintage Star Wars action figures.

'TEMA HIMA: THE ART OF LIVING IN TOHOKU'
30 minutes, Tom Vincent and Yu Yamanaka
Headlining the evening's event, and brought back by popular demand is a beautifully shot series of vignettes of life in Tohoku, a region in Japan severely hit by the March 2011 earthquake.  The film showcases the work and philosophy of the craftspeople in the region, making a range of artisanal crafts involving metal and woodworking, weaving, and food production.  Set against stark and elegant landscapes, the film illustrates the tema (effort) and hima (time) traditionally devoted in Tohuku to making things - slowly and exquisitely.

Special thanks to Rejuvenation (our film night sponsor) and to the Portland Japanese Garden and NW Documentary (our community partners.)
